Essie Resort Collection Spring/Summer 2012 Swatches and Review

Essie's annual Resort collection is an odd one this year! It has a clear theme like resort collections of the past, but it has a somewhat random-looking color selection. That's not to say that it's bad... In fact, it's really quite good:

Essie No More Film. A dark indigo creme. It's very dark, but not so dark that it looks black. You can tell that it's blue in every type of lighting, though it is still very close to that blackened-blue territory. It has a slight faded/weathered look to it after it dries.

Essie Pink-A-Boo. This is a sheer, cool-toned milky pink base with color-shifting glass fleck shimmer. You can see it very strongly in the bottle, and unlike a lot of other colors like this (including Essie's own To Buy or Not To Buy), the duochrome does actually show up on the nail. It even seems to have more shimmer than Jessica Rolling Rose. The main color is a light turquoise and it shifts to darker pure blue and purple at one angle and pink, red and gold at another angle. Very pretty.

Essie She's Picture Perfect. This one is my favorite. It's a light blue-toned lavender creme base with some subtle purple-pink-red iridescent shimmer. The creme base is so dense that the shimmer doesn't look shimmery, it's more of a flash of color that glows rather than sparkles. The shimmer is very subtle but it comes out more in bright light. The flash photo washes out the color, but it brings out that lovely shimmer so you can get a better look at it.

Essie Sure Shot. Glowy, slightly duochrome dark magenta. It has a subtle blue-purple flash that sits on top of the polish when you view it at an angle, but head-on it looks like a plain deep pink shimmer. This reminds me a lot of an ancient Wet n Wild polish I used to wear in the early 90s... I think it was called Cherry Fudge or Chocolate Cherry or something like that. This color brought back so many memories of that old polish!

The formula on these was good. Not too runny, not too thick. I had no trouble with application. I did three coats of each and all but No More Film needed the third coat. Dry time is fast.

Unusual grouping of colors, yes, but they're all good ones. I like the duochrome shimmer in Pink-A-Boo and She's Picture Perfect and I like the deep, rich-looking color of No More Film and Sure Shot. My favorite is definitely She's Picture Perfect, though.

The Essie 2012 Resort collection is available now.

  3. I have Pink-a-boo and She's picture perfect. The pink is great, I was a little disappointed that the shimmer in spp was so hidden. I love both anyway :-)

    1. Same, but I would love the purple color of it even if it didn't have any shimmer :) I've already worn it 4 times, haha

  4. Ok, Scrangie, I have a beef with you... These have been out for how long?? I have seen them in stores and seen numerous swatches. I had almost NO interest in buying these until YOU swatched them and now I want them all!!!!!! How do you manage to make every single Polish look soooooo irresistable?!?!?!?! ;-)

    1. Hahaha, really? Awe, thank you! That's funny that you say that because I was feeling like these swatches were horrible and I felt bad about it, so I put off posting them! So thank you again :)

  5. Gotta love nail nostalgia. :D I think I had that Wet n Wild polish too! I can picture the bottle in my mind, but for the life of me I cannot remember anything about the name.

    1. It was one of the old round bottles with the white handle and white lettering on the front, right? I can even remember the smell of it, and how horrible the formula was!

    2. Yep! Only mine was more white and pink, due to all the polish everywhere, hahaha. Looking back, the formula was indeed quite awful. But I loved it!

    3. i had it too!!! there was a dark purple with a similar finish, and i used to make racing stripes down the length of my nails with the opposite color. :)

  6. This is a really odd collection but each one is sooo pretty!

  7. Oh wow, those are great! They're also different enough from anything I have that I could justify most of them. I have China Glaze Secret Peri-wink-le, which is similar to She's Picture Perfect but is a straight-up creme; that one I might skip. But you actually made me like Pink-a-boo, and I really have trouble liking pink!

    1. She's Picture Perfect is a bit darker and much more purple than Secret Peri-wink-le, but unless you're a huge purple fan, you probably don't need both. Otherwise, they're all gorgeous!

    1. Essie's been really good lately (at least the past 2-3 years), for some reason they're being much more adventurous by including a green or a glitter or even a neon in recent collections! :)

  13. I've had Sure Shot for a while but haven't worn it yet. What's got me interested is Pink-A-Boo - I was just looking for Jessica's Rolling Rose on Ebay! This is a way more accessible option for me! Thanks for the tip!

  16. Oh pretty! Pink-a-Boo is so sweet!

  17. Ah, sorry, they're not really comparable. The most similar thing about them is that they're light colors with shimmer. Shade, shimmer and texture are completely different in each :(

  18. I have Pink-a-Boo and it is really pretty! Your swatches are all gorgeous though!

  19. All lovely but I adore Peek-A-Boo it's BEAUTIFUL!

  21. Ohhh I love Pink-a-Boo and No More Film! Do you know if Sure Shot is similar to China Glaze 108 Degrees?

  22. You got a winning bottle of Pink-A-Boo, the shimmer doesn't show up quite as strong on my nails as it does on your :/ But I did layer OPI "I Juggle... Men" over it to give it a boost ;)

  23. The blue surprised me; my impression of Essie is that the company specializes in 'mundane' colors that appeal to the largest common denominator of the population. My impression of the company is slowly changing, though, thanks to collections like this one! I love She's Picture Perfect and Sure Shot, although I'm having some difficulty associating this range of color with photos, lol.

  24. I was thinking No More Film was more purple-y, but apparently not! I like Picture Perfect best.

  25. I'm waiting for my order of She's Picture Perfect. But why does it shows in the swatch as blue instead of purple? It looks more like Coat Azure, although still very pretty.

  26. I put on She's Picture Perfect last night and I'm in love. It looks amazing, though a lot less blue on my very fair red-head skin tone. For a little extra sparkle, I put a coat of an ancient, black-label OPI shimmery top coat called Sheer Enchantment. It gives just enough interest without detracting from the pretty lavender polish. I love it!

Thanks for such a great site. I check it everyday!

  27. I'm wearing She's Picture Perfect and it's beautiful. It's much less blue on my very fair red-headed skin tone though. For a little extra sparkle I added a coat of an ancient OPI black-label shimmery top coat called Sheer Enchantment. It throws off pink shimmer when the light hits, yet it still let's the beautiful lavender polish show through. I love this combination.

  30. Ah crud! I saw this collection out... somewhere... today and totally passed it over without looking closely. I'm usually not a huge fan of Essie (I tend to find most pretty but boring for the price). I'll have to go back and snatch up Pink a Boo and She's Picture Perfect asap!

  37. I really love this set, I just purchased the Diamond cosmetics summer set and Purple Lights of Paris is so similar and the blue shimmer effects translates good. I do love them both~just the blue shimmer in the Essie pink A Boo was a dud for me! Nice mani & post.

  43. She's Picture Perfect was the only colour of the bunch that really stood out to me. :) I was really lucky to have received it in one of my Loose Button Luxe Boxes that I subscribed for. :)

All these colours look great on you, Scrangie!

  46. Edited to say I've had chance to try them all now and I liked the pale pink more than I thought I would and No More Film was the one I expected to love but was my least favourite. Sure Shot is great though, it takes me back too :)
