These are called Cover Girl Blast Flipstick, and they're basically a double-ended lipstick. One side has a darker, more pigmented color and the other side has a sheerer, lighter shade and you can either wear them both alone or layer them with each other to create a third color.
Light side, dark side, and both shades mixed.
Light side, dark side, both shades layered.
ANYWAY
What I liked:
- These are super pigmented! I wasn't expecting such insane color payoff from a drugstore lipstick.
- They're extremely long wearing. I could wear them all day and only have to touch them up after eating.
- The colors are bright and interesting and apply true to the color you expect, they don't morph like some brands.
- The packaging is eye-catching because it's so colorful and shiny.
- They smell okay. They're not heavily perfumed, but they do have a generic lipstick base smell to them.
What I didn't like:
- The tubes are bulky and awkward and despite the pretty foil labels, they look cheap.
- I got mine on sale, but they're normally pretty pricey for a drugstore lipstick, around $9 depending on the store.
- They are murder on my lips. They felt okay while they were on... In fact, they felt pretty good, only a tolerable amount of dryness after a few hours. However, the next day my lips felt like they were covered in tiny cuts. They burned and felt tight and rough. I've never experienced that from a lipstick before. Allergic reaction?
- They stain your lips. This is bad because they don't stain your lips the same color as the lipstick. For example, the purple one stains my lips an unappealing shade of red-pink instead of purple. And the stain lasts longer than any actual lip stain I've used.
I like the individual colors alone more than layered. I love the interesting colors selection, like duochrome purple and super bright coral shimmer, and the pigmentation is excellent... But I'm afraid to buy any more because of how much they irritated my lips. Maybe I'll wear them over a primer next time, or remember to apply balm over them to see if it prevents the irritation. My favorite is Stunner, but I love how truly purple Flashy is. I like the light/layering half of Tease but the opaque half is the wrong color for me.
Your swatches make these look amazing. I didn't buy any because of the packaging but now...
ReplyDeleteWow, that's a great idea - 3 lipstics in 1. Such a pity I can't get those in my country.
ReplyDeleteThese are beautiful, first impressions i thought they would all be quite sheer, but they're not, i think i'd wear them individually though x
ReplyDeletei wore the dark purple side of flashy on new years eve and they really screwed with my lips the next day! i love the colour so much though, it's the first true purple i've been able to find in a drugstore.
ReplyDeleteYour swatches are so gorgeous. I liked the looks of these, they are: 1) a great idea, 3 lipsticks in one! and 2) all gorgeous colours. But I'm not so keen on the whole burning lips thing. Plus I don't think we can get cover girl (at least not easily)in the UK. Hopefully some other brand will pinch this idea soon! :-) xxx
ReplyDeleteI think this is a really clever idea, although I'm not sure that I would use these any more than regular, single-shade lipsticks. I tend to mix lip products already, and I feel like I would miss the freedom of being able to grab any two lipsticks to wear together, since this is so bulky I probably wouldn't want to carry a third shade with me just for one lip look!
ReplyDeleteOhhhh I love that orange one! I don't think the light color would look good on me, but I'm a sucker for orange lipstick.
ReplyDeleteI used to layer lipstick back in high school. I'd walk around with two tubes of different colors everyday lol

ReplyDeleteI saw these at Target and didn't get any 'cos of the poor color selection, a lot of them seemed the same and there are a lot of not-so-wearable shades
ReplyDeleteThese look amazing! I like Tease the best, because the indiv and mixed colours both look lovely. :D Don't think I can get them here, though, :(
ReplyDeleteWow. I wanted to try the first one you swatched but I get dry lips easliy so I think I'll pass. Thanks for the head's up
ReplyDeleteThanks for these swatches. I have had terrible luck with CoverGirl Lip products and just stopped purchasing them. I will say that they have amazing customer service. One of my lipsticks went bad within a month of purchase and they sent me a replacement coupon. If you have an allergic reaction and the store won't take it back, I would recommend contacting the company.
ReplyDeleteYour swatches look pretty spectacular. At first glance I thought I have to have these. But reading on I doubt I'll be buying these lipsticks.
ReplyDeleteThat's really funny!
ReplyDeleteAnd I love the colors!!
Scrangie! Your swatches of these blew me away, and I thought that I needed to get one immediately. But then, of course, I continued reading your review to see if there were any major cons.
ReplyDeleteHmm...I really wonder if you had an allergic reaction. My skin's sensitive, so I'm not sure if I want to take that risk. Sounds painful! And I'm not a fan of the staining, especially since I don't usually wear lipstick and would have to bare my natural lips out in public.
Thanks for sharing your experience with these! I hadn't seen these in stores yet, so it was a great heads up.
Thanks for the open and honest review. I love the swatches and colors, but the staining of the lips is a worry for me. I may give it a try....maybe. LOL
ReplyDeleteI love it. I have many colors, favorites are Stunner and Cheeky. I have no lip irritation and the color lasts thru everything but food. Don't expect a creamy lipstick, it's a little on the dry side, but it holds up well to a little bit of gloss if you want it.
ReplyDeleteI had the SAME experience with these. I had it in two shades of purple. I had to throw it out because I couldnt get it to come completely off and I had a REALLY bad reaction to it. So much so that I googled it to find out if anyone else had the same. After taking it (almost) off, the next day my lips were swolen and a few days after that my lips turned REALLY dark. Its almost as if i smoke (I dont). They feel like I kissed some fire and feel blistered. I have been using burts bees tinted lip balm to ease the discomfort. Just to make sure it WAS the lipstick. I had used it before and it did the same thing. This is the second time its happened. Toooooooo bad. I do not know what they are putting in these lipsticks but people with allergies be VERY AWARE.
