Hidden Treasure versus Hidden Treasure

As requested, here's a side-by-side comparison of the original Sally Hansen Hidden Treasure, the "new" Sally Hansen Hidden Treasure and the original Sally Hansen Ring My Shell. The original Hidden Treasure and Ring My Shell were both released as part of the same collection, I believe it was the Spring or Summer 2010 collection. Here's my swatches of both shades from when they were first released.

Sally Hansen Hidden Treasure (2012 release), Sally Hansen Ring My Shell, Sally Hansen Hidden Treasure (original).

Hidden Treasure (original), Ring My Shell, Hidden Treasure (new).

I foresee the re-used name causing a lot of confusion as the original Sally Hansen Hidden Treasure is an extremely popular shade. In 2010, everyone clamored to get a bottle and it sold out very fast. In 2011, there were still people looking for it and most polish collectors already owned a bottle or two. The color is a little redundant now because of the sudden influx of flake glitters in the past few months, but for those still looking for the original Hidden Treasure, be sure that you're getting the one without the stock number on the label.

  1. I'm sad that I missed out on the original Hidden Treasure, but I only seriously started getting into nail polish during the end of 2010, so I didn't know what to look out for. I hoped Sally Hansen would bring it back, and I guess they listened, they just forgot that we meant both name and polish. Oh well! There's a lot of substitutes now out there.

  2. The new one looks pretty, though.

  3. Melissa, try Essie's Shine of the Times. I've seen it everywhere (CVS, Walgreens) and I'm always surprised it hasn't sold out. IMO, it beats Hidden Treasure.

  4. Plus one of the new FingerPaints Special Effects - Flashy - is a dupe for the flakie Hidden Treasures (as well as Nubar 2010).

  5. Sally Hansen FAIL. Awesome post. I should have known they not only copied the name but color too! GAH

  6. Wow... is there no business sense left in the world? No marketing talents exist? This is a hard FAIL for Sally Hansen. They totally missed what made 'Hidden Treasure' so popular... missed the boat completely!

  7. I'm pretty disgusted not only with the re-issue of the name with a different re-issue colour, but also by that tweet they answered the question about it with. "On-trend"? How is that "on-trend"?

  8. If they wanted to be on trend, they would have re-issued the original Hidden Treasure, seeing how popular flakies are right now!!

  9. This was a good catch. I wonder if someone just accidentally mixed the polishes and their names up... Thanks for the comparison!

  10. I scoped out the Sally Hansen display today at Walgreens to see if I could find this. They had a beigy nude on the display called...(wait for it)...Peachy Keen! I'll see if I can snap a pict. of it. C'mon they can't come up with more creative names! Also there was a WnW mint green called Do you Need a Re-Fresh Mint? !?!?

  11. I don't own the Original Hidden Treasure(but I have lots of dupes) and I was sadly disappointed by the "new" hidden treasure!!! I didn't even know about Ring My Shell...I say this is a Sally Hansen FAIL!!! Thanks for the post!

  12. bad move Sally Hansen, bad move. is there really such a shortage of names that HT had to be recycled? smh.

  13. This is so blatant I can't see how SH would miss or muck this one up.

  14. I feel like this is a reallly bad labeling fail or something! Or they're trying to pull the wool over our eyes

  15. Ugh this is a mean trick Sally Hansen! I ordered Nubar 2010 so I have something similar but it is going to get very tricky if they keep recycling names!

  16. Thankfully I have 2 bottles of the original. That's really unfair that companies re-issue polishes with the same names. Ridiculous!

  17. I really like the new color, even though I have a dupe or two. The name aggravates me so much. I *may* buy it and decant into another bottle. Maybe. I don't want to reward Sally Hansen's trick with my money...

  18. I can only guess that there was a HUGE mistake made in regards to the labeling of a massive lot of these 2 polishes and the company is sure to be aware of it now!

  19. So happy I have a bottle of the original!

  20. I have the original HT but missed RMS. I would like to have the dupe, but not enough to reward them for not so slyly recycling the name of their most popular polish in how many years?, without actually producing the goods. BAD CALL Sally.

  21. I'm surprised that they would re-use the name. Wouldn't they realize how much confusion it would cause? *Tsk tsk*

I never understood why giving something a completely new name is that difficult. If it's a different colour, give it a different name!

Thanks for these comparison shots, Scrangie!

  22. Great and informative post! This is a real shame; the Quality Control is off the chain lately with np companies. Like the renaming of Perplex to Naughty by Revlon and re-releasing it for Spring 2012. What's the deal?

  23. Why on EARTH would they release a Hidden Treasure that isn't the coveted flakie? That makes NO sense. :(

  24. Given that the two polishes look completely different, they could've used another name eg. buried treasure maybe. It's still a pretty polish.

  25. I was excited initially to hear that it's being re-released, but was so disappointed with what I saw. I think they should've just used another name for it.

  26. Could it be possible that Sally Hansen wanted to reissue the flakie HT but just pulled the wrong formula (since RMS was originally released along with HT)?
Could someone there have been that oblivious? If so, I wonder if they're sending out resumes now...
At any rate, it's a dirty trick to play on your customers, Sally!
And thanks for this comparison, Scrangie!

  27. Thanks ever so much on the eduction here for SH HT. I had decided as you said, I did not need a bottle - esp at $25 and $30 a bottle for the original. I have Nubar 2010, Essie Lux Effects as as you said a # of other spin offs in this opal flakie. I really encourage those who think they really need the original SH HT that you don't. You honestly won't see much if any difference from some of the new other brand same things. Just that many feel SH HT did it first. I had some of the same color change flakies from other brands before SH but maybe not ones known well to others. Please, save your $ for other goodies in polish land - even the biggest of collectors unless you like tossing out good $, you don't need the 2010 release of SH HT! HONEST! So very glad you did this post Scraggie. Thanks bunches!

  28. Nubar flakes are MUCH smaller though..and it isn`t as packed as SH HT.Maybe it`s just me,but I don`t see that red and green that much in nubar.Must try Essie.I`m gonna get me both HT bottles and Ring my Shell, just for the fact how crazy this story is :-)
