Nubar Opulent Pearl Layered

Since flake glitter polishes seem to be making a huge comeback this year, thought I'd show you one of the first "flakie" polishes I owned. I think a lot of people forget about this one, but it does actually count a flaky polish, even if it doesn't look like it is from the bottle pictures on Nubar's website.

Nubar Opulent Pearl over black. I really don't like how this looks over black, but it does show the flake colors really well. Nubar Opulent Pearl is a cloudy white base with mid-sized flakes in all different colors. There's red, orange, pink, green, and blue and they all shift colors like normal flake glitter does. The shapes and sizes of the flakes in this polish seem more uniform than in a lot of other flaky polishes.

Nubar Opulent Pearl over Nubar Angels Whisper. I have this thing about flaky topcoats over white polish. I just love the combination. I think it looks like opals. Every time I have a new flaky polish I always want to wear it over white right away. White shimmers are best, but this white-based duochrome frost makes a pretty good base, too.

Nubar Opulent Pearl over Nubar Angelic Glitter. Flakes over regular glitter is another one of my favorite ways to wear them. I know you probably can't tell it from these horrible blurry pictures, but this looked awesome in real life. Both the glitter base and the flake topcoat are duochrome so it was constantly changing and flashing rainbows of color.

Apparently I didn't take a picture of Opulent Pearl by itself. Looks good alone because of the cloudy white base that gives it a little more coverage than some of the clear-based flake polishes.

Now I have this feeling that I'm going to have flakie overload pretty soon. I've seen at least two collections of flake polishes coming out in January so far and you know what that means... All the brands will probably start copying each other like they usually do (*cough*CRACKLE*cough*) and we may end up with a flood of flakies. We shall see...

  2. I think I like it best over the Angelic Glitter, I've never tried layering a flakey over a normal glitter (yet another thing I need to try, I'm falling so behind!) Hopefully flakies won't get as tiring as crackle, though. I have so many crackles and the only thing they do is annoy me when I use them accidentally thinking they are normal polish.

  3. Is there any way you could do a combo of Essie marshmellow(or any plain creme white?) and a flakie (possibly maybe a blue based flakie?).I'm very curious how that combo would look!

By the way, what other collections are doing flakies,I definitely need to start planning lol.

  4. Gorgeous! I agree with your opinion about layering Opulent Pearl over black - maybe a deep blue would be better looking?
Over white, it just looks so wintery and pretty. Like Christmas lights reflecting off of snow.

  6. I hope we start getting a lot of flakies, because I want a Unicorn Puke dupe that I don't have to pay $18+ dollars for!

  7. damn. I don't want flakies to be all over the place. I hate trends like the crackle. I liked crackle before it really hit the ~masses.

I'm sad that this one isn't more clear. I like layering flakies over colors, but this seems to make the darker colors look milky :(

  8. I had no idea Opulent Pearl was a flakie polish. I may have to add this one to my wishlist now...

And I love flakie polishes (far more than I ever loved crackle ones) so I don't think I'll be too upset if we suddenly get a flood of them!

  9. I have Opulent Pearly and it looks lovely on you, but I have the same gripe, the cloudy base color... All the colors from that Treasures collection Nubar released do...I still am searching for the perfect layering polishes for each.

  10. Wow, I like this better than Nubar 2010! Thank you for sharing~
Yes, I think we're getting flakie-overload from the brands now, but I'm okay with it... through it a few special polishes will be made to cherish, I'm sure. =D

  11. I predict you're going to be exactly right. Something cool comes out (new flakies like unicorn puke) we all scramble to buy it and it's unique for about a month, then the masses get ahold of it and it loses it's appeal to people who like different and unique nails. Flakies might be a bit different though because as you just catch a glance of them in the store they don't look THAT remarkable. You kinda have to see them layered to know what they can do. I still think you're right tho. :)

  12. Oh WHAT! I had no IDEA this existed! I thought Nubar's only flakie was 2010! Ordering asap. Looks like the flakes in this are much denser than in the Ludurana flakie I got recently, and also maybe denser than the similarly-hued Nails Inc one. Looooove.

  13. I could use some flakie overload. At least it's more wearable than the crackle polish. I doubt I'd get tired of them. I do love it over black. It looks gorgeous over anything.

  18. Scrangie, I love when you do posts like this that remind me about gems already in my stash. :) Saves me money and reminds me not to neglect them!

My favourite is the way it looks over a dark polish, but I can see why you like it over white - really does remind me of opals.

  20. @Helena - ME NEITHER! GRR. Nubar has been one of my go-to brands for yeaaaars... but lately, between super-lame recent collections, boring and very obvious Chanel knock-offs, few new releases, high shipping costs, and now the one color I want that I don't have...is apparently discontinued? Booooooo.

  21. This is so awesome! I love it when you point out great, overlooked gems like this. Thanks! I had no idea Nubar had a flakie other than 2010.

  22. Does anyone know of a silver flakie? Nfu Oh don't have one, neither does Inglot. The other brands that I've seen only have the one flakie which is a multi-color combination of orange, green, gold, or pastel colors.

  23. Are the two flakie collections you are referring to the Finger Paints one and Essie Luxeffects? Btw, I love this over white!

  24. Wow, I love the second version, it really does look like opals. Beautiful.

  25. These colors are gorgeous! I wonder if they sell these at Ulta....

I have a question for you: How do you manage to apply your nail polish SO perfectly? I've seen this on other nail polish blogs as well and it's made me wonder--how do you do it?!

    Thanks!

    Jessica
